THE SEMITONES CHILDREN’S AND YOUTH CHOIR

Semitones Children’s and Youth Choir

The Semitones Children’s and Youth Choir, for children and youth aged 8 to 16, aims to have fun while learning music and movement basics and is inclusive of all ability levels. The group also strives to integrate children of all abilities and build leadership, acceptance, confidence, and promote expression.

The choir began in January of 2014 and is based on the model of Kids of Note, directed by Brenda Baker in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

Under the direction of Susan Farrell, the Semitones meet on Saturdays from 12:00 p.m. to 12:45 p.m. at St. Paul’s United Church (11526-76 Ave). The Semitones also have volunteer helpers drawn from the Better Together, Òran and Shumayela (of the Korora Choir Association).

A young girl in a wheelchair with a polka dot scarf around her neck, looking surprised or confused, is sitting next to an older woman with matching polka dot scarf, both are in a room with wooden panels, and there is a blurred figure in black in the foreground.

“For my disabled daughter, music is therapy. The weekly exposure to beautiful choral music and the inherent sense of inclusion and community that the Semitones offers, for her, has been magical. The sincere and heartfelt gratitude our family feels for the amazing people who make this group possible is hard to put into words!”
